XRP Ledger Has Entered the Federal Banking System. Here’s the Latest

Something significant just shifted in the digital asset industry. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted Ripple final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank. Crypto researcher SMQKE (@SMQKEDQG) shared the news alongside an OCC document confirming the approval.
He wrote, “The XRPL has entered the Federal Banking System.” Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse announced the milestone just before Ripple Swell, marking the culmination of a regulatory process that began in 2025.
What the OCC Document Shows
The document SMQKE shared outlines a landmark shift. Several major crypto firms received conditional approval to operate as federally regulated national trust banks. Ripple is among them, alongside Circle, BitGo, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Paxos.
The OCC granted Ripple National Trust Bank approval to custody client assets under federal oversight. These limited-purpose charters do not permit deposit-taking or loan issuance. They do, however, place Ripple directly inside the federal banking framework.

What the Charter Authorizes
Ripple National Trust Bank operates as a limited-purpose institution. It will manage the segregated reserves backing RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin. It will also provide fiduciary custody services for digital assets to institutional clients.
The charter places these operations under direct federal supervision by the OCC, while a separate state-regulated entity retains the role of RLUSD issuer.
Federal Oversight as a Competitive Advantage
The significance of federal supervision cannot be overstated for institutional adoption. Garlinghouse previously stated that the charter gives Ripple “an even stronger foundation for RLUSD and the institutional products we’re building across payments, custody and capital markets.”
Institutions managing large capital allocations require regulatory clarity before engaging with any financial counterparty. Ripple now operates under the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) and the OCC simultaneously. That dual-layer oversight is a credential very few crypto firms can offer.
Why This is Positive for XRP
RLUSD’s market value has more than doubled since the start of 2026, reaching $2.6 billion. The stablecoin operates across Ripple’s payments infrastructure and serves as collateral on Ripple Prime, the company’s institutional brokerage platform.
The XRP Ledger serves as the settlement layer for these operations. As RLUSD usage grows under federally regulated reserve management, activity on the XRP Ledger increases, driving up demand for XRP on the network.
SMQKE’s post frames this as a structural shift for the XRP Ledger, not just a corporate milestone for Ripple. The XRP Ledger now has a direct connection to the federal banking system.
