Canton Network Eyes First SEC-Approved Tokenized Trades Defeating OKX ICE Venture

Canton Network Eyes First SEC-Approved Tokenized Trades Defeating OKX ICE Venture

TL;DR

  • First Listing: Canton Strategic Holdings plans to make its common stock available on TSV, creating a potential path to the first tokenized equity trades conducted under the SEC’s new framework.
  • Different Model: Canton Network is sponsoring its own tokenization effort through Fairmint, allowing TSV to avoid the issuer objection process that applies when third parties tokenize shares.
  • Trading Framework: TSV intends to use Tradecraft for 24/7 trading with atomic settlement, giving approved participants access to tokenized stock transactions under the SEC’s Innovation Exemption.

A stock-trading venue could soon deliver the first tokenized equity trades under the SEC’s new framework, potentially moving ahead of the joint initiative involving OKX and ICE. The development centers on a planned listing by Canton Strategic Holdings and marks a significant milestone for companies seeking to bring shares onchain through Canton Network. The proposed trading activity is expected to take place on Canton Network.

Canton Network Moves Ahead With First Planned Listing

Canton Strategic Holdings announced an agreement to make its common stock available on TSV LLC, with trading expected to begin as soon as Monday. The move places Canton Network at the center of what could become the first live example of trading under the SEC’s recently introduced tokenization framework. The Nasdaq-listed company has engaged SEC-registered onchain transfer agent Fairmint to issue the tokenized shares and maintain official ownership records.

Unlike models that rely on outside parties to tokenize a company’s stock, Canton Strategic Holdings is directly sponsoring the process. That distinction is important because it allows TSV to bypass the 30-day issuer notice-and-objection process required when an unaffiliated entity seeks to tokenize shares. Because Canton Network is being used in a company-backed structure, the venue avoids uncertainty over potential issuer objections and gains a clearer path toward launch.

SEC Framework Creates an Alternative Route

TSV stated that it formally notified the SEC of its intent to operate a tokenized securities venue before the OKX-ICE venture submitted its own notice. The waiting period associated with TSV’s initial public filing has already passed. TSV plans to use the Tradecraft protocol on Canton Network to provide around-the-clock trading access for approved institutional and retail participants.

Both TSV and the OKX-ICE venture intend to operate under the SEC’s five-year Innovation Exemption, which permits qualifying platforms to trade tokenized U.S. stocks through permissioned automated market maker pools. Under the Canton Network setup, trades would settle atomically, meaning shares and payment transfer simultaneously as part of the same transaction.

Canton Network Gains Momentum Through Issuer Participation

Fairmint will oversee transfer compliance, and token holders are expected to receive the same rights and privileges as investors holding CNTN shares through Nasdaq. For Canton Network, the development offers an early test of an issuer-supported model for tokenized equities. TSV CEO Ali Abrar said the venue wanted its first listing to establish a benchmark for the market, while Canton Strategic Holdings Chairman and CEO Mark Wendland said tokenization can improve market access and transparency. If trading begins as anticipated, Canton Network could secure an important first-mover advantage in the race to bring regulated U.S. equities onchain.
