iConnections CEO: If This Regulation Passes, a Massive Influx of Capital Could Flow into Bitcoin

Ron Biscardi, CEO and co-founder of iConnections, one of the world’s leading platforms connecting institutional investors and fund managers, made noteworthy statements regarding the future of Bitcoin (BTC) and the cryptocurrency market. Biscardi said that if comprehensive cryptocurrency regulations are implemented in the US, a large amount of institutional capital could flow into the sector.

In an interview evaluating institutional investors’ approach to Bitcoin, Biscardi stated that perceptions of cryptocurrencies have fundamentally changed in the last five years. He noted that large investors who previously did not view Bitcoin as a real investment vehicle now accept digital assets as a legitimate asset class.

Biscardi said, “Five or six years ago, a significant portion of institutional investors thought Bitcoin wasn’t real and would never become an investable asset class. That has completely changed. I hardly know anyone who thinks that way anymore.”

According to Biscardi, the main reason why large-scale capital inflows remain limited despite Bitcoin’s acceptance by institutional investors is regulatory uncertainty in the US.

Biscardi, who considered the Trump administration’s failure to make the expected progress on this issue disappointing, emphasized the need for a strong legal framework, particularly for pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and large foundations to make significant investments.

Biscardi stated, “One of the biggest disappointments of the Trump administration has been its failure to pass regulations that would bring cryptocurrencies up to institutional investment standards.”

Biscardi noted that while cryptocurrency funds are having a high number of meetings with institutional investors, this interest has not yet translated into billions of dollars in investments.

According to Biscardi, a significant portion of existing cryptocurrency funds come from individual investors and family wealth management companies. Pension funds, large foundations, and sovereign wealth funds, however, are taking a more cautious approach to the sector.

Biscardi said the following regarding the impact of establishing the regulatory framework:

“If these regulations were implemented, we would see a massive influx of institutional money into this asset class. What we need is the regulatory infrastructure. If we can provide that, this asset class will absolutely boom.”

Binance Attack and Custody Security Concerns

Biscardi stated that security and asset custody services also play a significant role in institutional investors’ concerns about the cryptocurrency market.

Citing the recent Binance attack as an example, Biscardi said that such incidents are viewed differently by individual investors and large financial institutions.

Biscardi countered the view that Binance’s compensation of losses could build trust among individual investors, stating that institutional investors were primarily focused on the fact that such a large security breach had occurred.

Biscardi, reminding that large funds are required to have their investment decisions approved by committees and boards of directors, stated that established financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and JPMorgan taking on larger roles in cryptocurrency custody services could increase institutional trust.

However, according to Biscardi, regulatory uncertainties must first be resolved before these financial institutions can make a widespread entry into the sector.

Biscardi stated that in previous years, institutional investors met with cryptocurrency funds to understand and learn about Bitcoin, but today their primary expectation is the creation of a legal and operational infrastructure that will allow them to invest safely.
