Vitalik Buterin Reveals What Crypto Exchanges Must Do To Survive

Moneycontrol sat down with Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin for an exclusive conversation on cryptocurrency security following the high-profile Binance breach.

The interviewer asked what guidance he would offer the industry after the incident underscored how even the most advanced exchanges remain exposed to cyberattacks and thefts, particularly as artificial intelligence tools grow more sophisticated.

Buterin replied by first pointing to encouraging trends in the underlying technology before turning to the practical mindset now taking hold across the sector. “The good news is that smart contract hacks have gone down a huge amount. All of the big hacks that we’ve seen over the last one and a half years, they’re much more concentrated in the user interface layer and in centralized components,” he said.

He added that while incidents haven’t disappeared, the foundation of reliable systems keeps strengthening, and leading firms are adjusting their priorities accordingly. “What we’ve been seeing is more and more people are realizing that their main responsibility for the next two years is not to win but to survive. Everyone is kind of figuring out what the concept of bunker mode means for them,” Buterin observed.

The Ethereum creator added that Binance’s decision to develop its own smart-chain infrastructure offers a useful example of how on-chain contracts can provide stronger protections, a direction he expects more platforms to pursue in the months ahead.

In the latest development, Binance continues recovering from the October 29, 2026, $6.3 billion hack, the largest in crypto history and attributed to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group. The exchange has replenished nearly all affected assets from its own reserves, resumed phased withdrawals, and frozen roughly $3 billion of the stolen funds.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao addressed the breach in a recent X post, stating, “A hack of this scale means serious security failures occurred. No platform is unhackable, but that cannot be an excuse.”

He further noted that certain details remain embarrassing, described the intrusion as a prolonged campaign that targeted numerous employees and systems, and stressed that as a shareholder, he expects the company to stay transparent, accept responsibility, and deliver meaningful security upgrades.
