Singapore Police Warn of Tampered Ledger Wallets

The Singapore Police Force has warned consumers about tampered Ledger cryptocurrency hardware wallets after at least two cases since September 10 caused losses of about $3.5 million. Preliminary investigations found that devices purchased from some retail stores in Singapore contained malicious hardware components. The alert adds a hardware-tampering vector to broader crypto scams. The modified components could capture recovery phrases or private keys and enable unauthorized transfers.

Police said the malicious components could expose wallet credentials and allow third parties to move cryptocurrency without the owner’s knowledge or consent. The SPF is in contact with Ledger, which is reviewing the affected cases, while police investigations continue. Authorities have not said that all Ledger devices or all Singapore retailers are affected, keeping the warning limited to the incidents identified so far.

Users with devices they suspect have been tampered with are advised to stop entering recovery phrases or making transactions and to contact the wallet provider through official support channels. Anyone who believes their credentials were compromised should consider moving remaining assets to a new trusted wallet with a newly generated recovery phrase using an uncompromised device. Police investigations remain ongoing while Ledger reviews the reported cases.
