Coinbase Drops 12% And Strategy Falls 6% Amid Binance Hack

TL;DR

  • Coinbase shares plunged 12.4%, while Strategy declined more than 6% as investors reacted to the Binance security breach and broader weakness across technology stocks.
  • Binance estimated that approximately $6.3 billion in assets were affected, although the exchange reported freezing roughly $3 billion and pledged to cover losses.
  • Strong quarterly profits failed to protect Coinbase and Strategy from the selloff, as Bitcoin weakened and investors reduced exposure to risk-sensitive assets.

Crypto-related stocks suffered significant losses on Friday as concerns surrounding a major Binance security breach coincided with renewed selling pressure across technology markets. Coinbase and Strategy led the declines, demonstrating how closely publicly traded crypto companies remain tied to digital asset prices and broader investor sentiment.

Coinbase (COIN) dropped 12.4% to approximately $140.70, while Strategy (MSTR), one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders, lost more than 6%, trading near $132.20. The declines came despite both companies reporting quarterly financial results after Thursday’s closing bell.

Binance Hack Adds Pressure As Bitcoin Weakens

The Binance security incident became an additional source of uncertainty for investors. The exchange estimated that approximately $6.3 billion in assets were affected by unauthorized withdrawals, reportedly linked to an attacker gaining access through a compromised employee laptop.

Binance stated that approximately $3 billion had been frozen onchain and that it would cover affected losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate resources. The company also reported no evidence that private wallet keys had been compromised, offering some reassurance to users concerned about the security of exchange infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin briefly approached $76,000 before recovering toward $77,900. The decline contributed to more than $1.5 billion in liquidations across leveraged cryptocurrency positions over a 24-hour period.

The pressure extended beyond crypto-specific developments. Technology stocks also declined as investors reassessed the enormous capital expenditures associated with artificial intelligence infrastructure. This combination created an unfavorable environment for high-beta assets, including cryptocurrency-related equities.

Coinbase And Strategy Face Different Earnings Challenges

Coinbase reported $719 million in third-quarter net income. However, adjusted net income stood at $78 million after excluding investment and crypto-asset gains. Adjusted EBITDA reached $333 million, representing a 60% sequential increase.

The exchange also reported $1.22 billion in total revenue, down from $1.87 billion a year earlier. Transaction revenue declined to $590 million, reflecting softer trading activity. These figures suggest that Coinbase continues to face challenges from lower transaction volumes despite maintaining profitability.

Strategy reported $19.53 billion in net income, largely driven by gains associated with its Bitcoin holdings. As of October 25, the company held 848,517 BTC. However, quarterly revenue slipped 3% to $125.4 million, highlighting the difference between accounting gains from Bitcoin appreciation and the performance of its underlying business operations.
