Standard Chartered Launches 24/7 Tokenized Deposit Settlement in Hong Kong

TL;DR
- Standard Chartered launched tokenized deposits in Hong Kong, its first market offering corporate clients 24/7 interbank settlement through HKMA’s EnsembleTX infrastructure.
- The solution uses regulated commercial-bank deposits rather than stablecoins, with interbank settlement in central bank money, including wholesale CBDC, on a continuous basis.
- China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade have executed live tokenized-deposit and money-market-fund settlement transactions, while Fireblocks and HashKey are joining the ecosystem.
Standard Chartered has launched tokenized deposits in Hong Kong with 24/7 interbank settlement capabilities, making Hong Kong the first market in the group to offer the solution to corporate clients. According to the official announcement, the service combines regulated commercial-bank deposits with programmable digital-asset workflows. Built on the bank’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure and connected to HKMA’s EnsembleTX, it extends the use of real-world asset tokenization into treasury and investment operations.
EnsembleTX Connects Tokenized Bank Money With Central Bank Settlement
The infrastructure allows tokenized deposits to move in real time between participating banks while interbank obligations settle in central bank money on a 24/7 basis. Settlement can include wholesale central bank digital currency, or wCBDC, through EnsembleTX. Standard Chartered says the model is intended to improve efficiency, interoperability and settlement predictability while reducing counterparty risk as value moves between institutions. This separates the product from payment stablecoins because the tokenized units represent commercial-bank deposits rather than privately issued reserve-backed tokens.
Corporate treasurers, banks, investment platforms and digital-asset businesses are the intended users. Eligible clients can use tokenized commercial-bank money for treasury, liquidity and investment workflows, including intragroup liquidity management. The model addresses the timing mismatch that can emerge when tokenized assets move outside conventional banking hours but the cash leg remains tied to legacy settlement schedules. That same operational challenge has driven interest in 24/7 tokenized-deposit settlement across institutional finance.
The launch is supporting live activity. China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade have executed tokenized-deposit transactions and settlement involving tokenized money-market funds through EnsembleTX, according to Standard Chartered. Fireblocks is also working with the bank to embed banking capabilities into its platform, while HashKey has joined the ecosystem. These integrations expand access points around the solution without changing its nature as regulated bank money. The model also complements Hong Kong’s evolving institutional tokenized-money infrastructure.
Standard Chartered plans to expand the solution to markets. Hong Kong now provides a live framework where tokenized deposits, tokenized assets and central-bank settlement can operate continuously across participating institutions. The launch builds on HKMA’s EnsembleTX infrastructure and its Supervisory Incubator for distributed-ledger technology, which supported development of the product. It also fits the city’s broader work around 24-hour onchain settlement and tokenized assets. The immediate significance is operational: corporate clients can use regulated bank deposits inside digital workflows without replacing them with stablecoins.
