Reports Say North Korea's Lazarus Group Likely Behind Binance Hack

Multiple media reports say that North Korea’s Lazarus Group is likely behind the massive $6.3 billion U.S. theft at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Several blockchain sleuths and analysis firms are quoted as saying that the Lazarus Group is the only hacker group with the skills, sophistication, and manpower to pull off such a heist.

North Korea’s Lazarus Group is a state-sanctioned hacking group known for stealing money via cyber attacks to fund the country’s illicit weapons program and black-market activities.

Jony Levin, the CEO of Chainalysis, said on social media that his firm assessed that the hack was likely carried out by North Korea, citing links to previous hacks by the country.

The Lazarus Group and North Korea have been linked to most of the biggest cryptocurrency hacks, including the $1.46 billion U.S. hack of Dubai-based crypto exchange Bybit in 2025.

Until now, the Bybit hack was the largest such attack in crypto’s history and made up the bulk of the $2.02 billion U.S. in digital assets that were stolen last year.

The Lazarus Group is believed to be responsible for other large crypto attacks, including the $292 million U.S. exploit of KelpDAO in April of this year.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) is trading at $76,700 U.S. on Oct. 30
