Elon Musk Drops Unexpected Reaction as Record-Breaking $6.3 Billion Binance Hack Rattles BTC, ETH, and XRP

The cryptocurrency market has been rocked by reports of a staggering $6.3 billion security breach involving Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, sending shockwaves through the digital asset industry as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple’s XRP come under fresh selling pressure.

Adding an unexpected twist to the unfolding drama, billionaire Elon Musk has reportedly weighed in, thrusting one of crypto’s biggest security scares into an even brighter spotlight and raising fresh questions about the safety of billions held on major trading platforms.

Binance Drained of $6.3 Billion

A fresh wave of selling has swept across the cryptocurrency market as renewed security fears rattle investor confidence, leaving major digital assets deep in the red.

Bitcoin led the downturn, shedding more than 3% over the past 24 hours and briefly sinking to $76,400 on Friday morning before clawing back some losses to trade around $77,336 at press time. The pain extended across the altcoin market, with Ethereum, BNB, the native crypto that powers the Binance ecosystem, Ripple’s XRP, and Solana also coming under heavy selling pressure.

The market downturn followed Binance’s disclosure on Thursday of a security incident involving approximately $6.3 billion in crypto assets, according to the report. Notably, the incident even dwarfs the $1.5 billion Bybit breach in 2025, which was attributed to North Korean hackers, making it the biggest crypto hack on record.

Binance co-founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao, fondly known as CZ, weighed in on the incident, saying on X that it appeared to be a hack. Although he no longer leads the exchange, Zhao remains a major shareholder and an influential figure in the crypto industry.

According to Binance’s preliminary findings, the attacker may have gained access through a DevOps engineer’s compromised laptop, using it to enter a service container and initiate unauthorized withdrawals. The exchange stressed that its investigation had found no evidence of wallet private keys being exposed, suggesting the suspected breach may have exploited internal system access rather than directly compromising the cryptographic keys securing user funds.

Binance Hack Triggers Urgent Hunt to Freeze Billions in Stolen Crypto

The incident has also prompted swift action from major stablecoin issuers. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company had frozen more than 1.567 billion USDT allegedly linked to the suspected Binance breach, stressing that safeguarding the crypto industry and its partners remained a priority.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire separately announced that more than 800 million USDC associated with the incident had been frozen in coordination with law enforcement. Circle said it would continue assisting investigators as they worked to establish what happened.

Meanwhile, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed the exchange was taking steps to help contain the fallout, including blocking transfers to compromised wallets. In a post on X, Armstrong emphasized the need for a coordinated industry response, stating that Coinbase was “doing everything we can to support in the current situation.”

“Moments like this call for the industry to work together,” he added.

Elon Musk Drops Chilling AI Warning After Binance Hack

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has raised concerns about a potential new threat to the crypto industry, predicting that superintelligent AI systems could eventually steal digital assets to finance their own objectives rather than serve human interests.

Musk shared the warning in an October 30 post on X while commenting on the reported $6.3B security incident involving Binance. He suggested that as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced and autonomous, some systems could seek access to money independently, writing: “Super intelligence agents will at some point do this to gain currency for themselves, not a human.”

Musk remarks were prompted by a post from crypto commentator Blaney, who described how the attacker behind the reported Binance security incident may have moved funds despite efforts to freeze the stolen assets. As the post noted, stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle froze billions of dollars’ worth of USDT and USDC linked to the incident, but the attacker allegedly obtained Ethereum before the restrictions could fully take effect.

Blaney also claimed the attacker deposited $60 million in USDT into the decentralized lending platform Aave and used it to borrow about $44.6 million in wrapped Ether (WETH). The alleged maneuver illustrates how decentralized finance protocols could potentially be used to move or obtain assets even as centralized issuers work to block suspicious funds.

Musk used the episode to raise a broader concern about the future of artificial intelligence, suggesting that increasingly advanced AI agents could one day carry out similar financial maneuvers autonomously to acquire digital assets for their own purposes rather than for human users.
