Binance Hack Shakes Market Confidence Amid $1.5B in Liquidations: Expert

The Binance security breach and a wave of leveraged liquidations have put Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) at a critical juncture, with the market’s next move depending on whether investors can regain confidence and absorb the liquidity shock, according to Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com.
In a note shared with CryptoProwl, Massabni said Bitcoin’s fall below $77,000 and more than $1.5 billion in liquidations over 24 hours reflect “the convergence of two powerful forces: weakening risk appetite on the one hand, and vulnerabilities in derivatives markets when investor confidence is suddenly shaken on the other.”
He argued that the Binance incident will have implications beyond the estimated $6.3 billion financial impact because of the exchange’s role in connecting global crypto liquidity, investors and market makers. Disruptions to its operations could affect order book depth, trading spreads, and execution costs across the wider market.
“This helps explain the market's reaction, even as the company maintains that user funds are safe and pledges to cover the losses,” he said.
Binance has said it froze nearly $3 billion in assets with help from industry partners and pledged to cover customer losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate resources.
Initial investigations have pointed to a possible compromise of a DevOps employee's device, potentially allowing attackers to exploit internal access privileges and execute unauthorized transfers. There has been no publicly confirmed evidence of leaked private wallet keys.
Massabni identified $75,000 as an important level to watch if selling pressure continues. A sustained break below it could expose Bitcoin to further losses, while a recovery in trading volumes and improved liquidity could help the asset stabilize.
He also warned that forced liquidations can intensify price declines without necessarily reflecting a change in investors’ long-term view of Bitcoin.
