Binance suffered a $6.3 billion security breach that triggered widespread cryptocurrency selling, sending Bitcoin below $79,000 and pushing major altcoins lower. The incident involved unauthorized withdrawals from the exchange, prompting emergency restrictions and coordinated efforts to recover affected digital assets.

According to Binance’s official announcement, investigators suspect attackers compromised a DevOps engineer’s laptop before accessing internal infrastructure. The breach reportedly allowed unauthorized withdrawal transactions through a service container, exposing the exchange to substantial financial losses.

Binance Reveals $6.3 Billion Hack and Freezes $3 Billion in Assets

Binance’s preliminary investigation identified the compromised laptop as the suspected entry point behind the massive security incident. Attackers reportedly accessed a service container and submitted unauthorized withdrawal transactions through the exchange’s internal systems.

The company estimated the financial impact at approximately $6.3 billion, exceeding the $1.5 billion Bybit hack recorded in 2025. Meanwhile, Binance coordinated with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets on-chain.

The exchange confirmed that investigators found no evidence of wallet private key exposure despite the scale of the breach. Binance also assured customers that their funds remained safe and pledged to cover all losses.

As an immediate precaution, Binance initially suspended deposits and withdrawals while security personnel examined the affected infrastructure. Additionally, the exchange revoked affected address authorizations and engaged law enforcement agencies to trace stolen cryptocurrency.

Blockchain intelligence partners also joined recovery efforts, helping investigators track suspicious transactions and identify those responsible for the attack.

Richard Teng Explains Hack Mechanism and Confirms Customer Protection

According to Binance CEO Richard Teng’s latest X post, the attack involved a complex operation rather than one compromised employee’s permissions. Teng clarified that investigators had not attributed responsibility to any individual involved in the exchange’s operations.

The CEO reiterated that Binance found no evidence of wallet private key leaks during its preliminary investigation. Furthermore, Teng confirmed that the exchange would cover losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate resources.

Significantly, Teng clarified that deposits remain operational, while withdrawals remain temporarily suspended during security improvements. Binance is reviewing its withdrawal service and related addresses before restoring normal operations.
