Alipay Denies Crypto Trading Support as Peer Introduces USDC Payment Option

Summary

  • Alipay rejected cryptocurrency trading claims involving Peer, maintaining that its payment network does not authorize virtual currency transactions through external platforms
  • Peer introduced a USDC escrow trading feature using yuan transfers, despite China’s restrictions on cryptocurrency transactions and related payment services.
  • Users accessing unauthorized cryptocurrency payment arrangements face potential account restrictions, transaction disputes, and security concerns involving third-party verification tools.

Alipay has denied supporting cryptocurrency transactions through its payment network, challenging a USDC trading option advertised by peer-to-peer platform Peer. The clarification separates Peer’s proposed yuan payment route from services officially authorized by the Chinese payments company.

According to Alipay’s statement on X, the company provides no virtual currency trading services and rejects unauthorized claims involving third-party platforms. Alipay also urged customers to safeguard their accounts and funds when encountering advertisements linking its services to cryptocurrency purchases. Peer’s October 27 announcement introduced a beta option allowing users to buy and sell USDC through yuan transfers using Alipay.

How Peer’s USDC Payment Arrangement Works

According to Peer, sellers deposit USDC into an escrow contract before buyers complete the corresponding payment in Chinese yuan. Once payment verification occurs, the contract releases the locked stablecoins to the buyer’s cryptocurrency wallet. This structure places the digital asset inside an escrow mechanism while the yuan payment travels through a separate payment service.

Peer’s listing therefore describes a transaction method rather than evidence that Alipay has approved cryptocurrency trading through its network. Alipay’s rejection challenges suggestions that the payment provider participates in or endorses Peer’s proposed service.

China’s Cryptocurrency Restrictions Shape the Dispute

China’s central bank classified cryptocurrency-related transactions as illegal financial activities in September 2021, establishing restrictions affecting domestic payment providers.

These rules place cryptocurrency transactions involving yuan under regulatory scrutiny, including arrangements involving transfers between individuals. Alipay and other payment services must address transactions associated with prohibited cryptocurrency activity under China’s regulatory framework.

Account Restrictions and Payment Risks

Users attempting such transactions may face payment reviews, account restrictions, or disputes involving transfers to unfamiliar counterparties. Although Peer’s escrow holds the seller’s USDC, that contract cannot reverse a yuan payment completed through Alipay.

Third-party verification tools may request access to account information, creating additional concerns about financial data and transaction security. Meanwhile, the advertised feature remains in beta, leaving its availability dependent on Peer’s platform arrangements.

Alipay advised users to verify payment permissions rather than interpret third-party listings as authorization. Alipay’s denial underscores the distinction between an advertised payment method and official provider support under China’s cryptocurrency restrictions.
