21Shares Highlights Bitcoin ETF Inflows Replacing Corporate Treasury Purchases

TL;DR
- 21Shares ETF Leadership: Bitcoin ETFs added 79,800 BTC worth $6.2 billion in Q3, surpassing newly mined supply and becoming the market’s main source of demand.
- Treasury Slowdown: Corporate treasury purchases dropped sharply from $7.1 billion in Q2 to about $1 billion in Q3, with Strategy adding only 1,700 BTC.
- Market Signals: Long-term holders sold into the rally, futures dominated trading activity, and several on-chain metrics weakened despite Bitcoin’s strong quarterly performance.
Bitcoin‘s strong third quarter rally was driven primarily by ETF demand rather than corporate treasury accumulation, according to new 21Shares research. The report showed a significant shift in buying behavior during Q3 2026, with U.S. ETFs emerging as the dominant source of demand despite concentrated inflow periods and continued profit-taking from long-term holders.
21Shares Notes ETF Demand Shift
Data cited by 21Shares showed Bitcoin rising 42.7% during the third quarter to reach $83,570 by Sept. 30. During the same period, Bitcoin ETFs added 79,800 BTC valued at $6.2 billion, exceeding the 41,300 BTC worth $2.9 billion that were newly mined. 21Shares reported that the ETF market experienced a sharp reversal from the second quarter, when the same funds recorded $4.8 billion in outflows.
The return of institutional demand changed the makeup of Bitcoin buyers across the market. However, ETF purchases were far from evenly distributed. Most of the inflows occurred during two brief windows between Aug. 17-27 and Sept. 21-25. Those periods accounted for 91% of total third-quarter ETF inflows measured in Bitcoin.
21Shares Compares ETFs With Treasury Companies
Corporate treasury demand moved in the opposite direction. 21Shares highlighted that listed companies holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets reduced their pace of buying substantially. Treasury company purchases fell from $7.1 billion in Q2 to roughly $1 billion in Q3. Strategy added only 1,700 BTC, valued at approximately $240 million, after selling $349 million during July and August.
According to the report, ETFs and treasury companies together added around $7.2 billion in value during the quarter, equal to 2.4 times the value of newly mined Bitcoin. At the same time, 21Shares said long-term holders reduced their balances by 248,000 BTC worth $17.4 billion. Despite selling into the rally, investors realized $9.3 billion in net profits during Q3, marking the first quarterly net gain of 2026.
21Shares Tracks Market Activity Beyond Price
Beyond demand trends, 21Shares also found that market activity presented a mixed picture. The MVRV ratio reached 1.56x, below its historical median of 1.71x dating back to 2013. Meanwhile, 21Shares analysis identifies the $97,000 holder-cost area as a level where selling pressure could increase. Roughly 30% of supply remained at a loss by the end of the quarter.
Futures trading represented 88.2% of the quarter’s $4 trillion trading volume, reinforcing the importance of ETF flows in evaluating demand. Transaction counts increased year over year, but transfer values, active addresses, and public Lightning Network capacity all declined during Q3.
